Indianapolis Quick Facts
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, known as IMPD, is the primary law enforcement agency for the city. IMPD handles patrol, investigations, and most criminal arrests within Indianapolis. It is one of the largest municipal police forces in the Midwest. When IMPD officers make an arrest, the person is transported to the Marion County Jail for booking. IMPD does not operate its own detention facility.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office also operates in the county and handles civil process, court security, and jail administration. The two agencies work side by side. Both send arrestees to the same facility. For any questions about someone currently in custody, contact the Marion County Sheriff's Office directly at Contact.MCSO@indy.gov, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM. The physical address for the jail and processing center is 695 Justice Way, Indianapolis, IN 46203. You can also reach the Marion County page for more details on the jail facility.
Indianapolis Jail Roster Search
Marion County provides a direct inmate lookup at inmateinfo.indy.gov/IML. This is the primary search tool for the Indianapolis jail roster. You can search by first and last name combined with date of birth, or by booking number, permanent number, state ID, county ID, FBI number, or ICE number. The search form also includes an "Include Archive Records" checkbox, which lets you pull up older booking records that are no longer active in the main roster.
The Marion County inmate search portal below gives you direct access to the current Indianapolis jail roster, including active booking records at the Marion County Jail and Arrestee Processing Center.
Enter a full or partial name to get a list of matching results. Each result shows the booking date, charges, and bond information for that person.
A second link is available at indy.gov/activity/find-a-person-in-jail. This page on the city's official website explains how the search tool works and links to the same lookup system. The Indy.gov jail finder page below also provides instructions for what to do if the person you are looking for does not appear in results.
If someone does not appear in the Marion County results, they may have been transferred or may be held at a different facility. Try the statewide INjail Public Portal as a backup.
VINE Victim Notification
VINE, which stands for Victim Information and Notification Everyday, is a free service that tracks custody changes at the Marion County Jail. You can register online at VINELink.com or call the toll-free line at 866-959-8463. Once you register, the system will notify you by phone or email when the person you are monitoring is released, transferred to another facility, or has another change in status. The system runs around the clock, every day of the year.
This service is most often used by crime victims who need to know when an offender leaves custody. But anyone can use it. There is no fee and no requirement to explain why you are registering. The Marion County Jail reports custody changes to VINE in real time, so alerts go out quickly after a status change occurs.
Booking Records and Your Rights
When someone is arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail, a public record is created. That record includes the person's name, date of birth, booking date, charges, bond amount, and booking number. Indiana law, specifically IC 5-14-3, makes most of these details available to anyone who asks. You do not need a lawyer or a court order to access basic booking information.
Indiana jail regulations at 210 IAC 3-1-6 set the standards jails must follow for how records are created and maintained. These rules help ensure that booking data is accurate and consistent. If you need records for someone who was released, you can submit a formal public records request to the Marion County Sheriff's Office. The office is required to respond within a reasonable time.
Some categories of information may be withheld. Active investigations, juvenile records, and certain sensitive identifiers can be restricted under Indiana law. However, the basic booking record for an adult is almost always public.
State Resources for Inmate Searches
The Indiana Department of Correction Offender Locator is separate from the county jail roster. IDOC tracks people serving sentences in state prisons, community corrections facilities, and work release programs. If someone is not showing up in the Marion County jail search, they may have been transferred to a state facility. The IDOC locator is free to use and updated regularly.
The INjail Public Portal covers county jails across Indiana. This statewide tool lets you search multiple counties at once without having to visit each sheriff's website. For Indianapolis and Marion County residents, it works as a useful backup when the primary inmate search tool is unavailable. It also helps if you are unsure which county a person may have been booked into.
