Find the Valparaiso Jail Roster Online

The Valparaiso jail roster is kept by Porter County, not the city itself. Valparaiso does not operate its own jail. People arrested by Valparaiso Police Department officers are booked at the Porter County Jail, located at 2755 State Road 49 in Valparaiso. The Porter County Sheriff manages that facility. This page explains how to search for current inmates, how booking records work under Indiana law, and what other tools are available if you can't find who you're looking for.

INjail Public Portal for Valparaiso and Porter County jail roster searches

Using INjail is a good option if you want to check whether someone may have been booked in a neighboring county or transferred from Porter County to another facility.

The statewide INjail portal is at public.indianajail.gov. It is free to use and does not require registration. Search by name. The system typically shows current bookings, charges, and bond status. Results update as jails submit new data, so there may be a short delay for very recent bookings. If someone was arrested within the last hour or two, call the jail directly at 219-477-3000 to confirm.

If the person you are looking for does not appear in either system, they may have been released, transferred to a state facility, or booked under a different name. Try the IDOC offender locator as a secondary check. See the Additional Resources section below for that link.

VINE Victim Notification

VINE is a no-cost notification service for Indiana residents. It tracks inmate custody status at Porter County Jail and alerts you any time a change happens. That includes releases, transfers, court appearances that result in custody changes, and other status updates. You register once and VINE monitors the roster for you 24 hours a day.

To register, visit VINELink.com or call 1-866-959-8463. You can set up alerts by phone, email, or text message. The service is available to anyone, including family members, victims, attorneys, and bail agents. You can register for multiple people at once if needed. Once registered, you will get a notice whenever the system detects a change to that person's custody record at Porter County Jail or any other participating facility in Indiana.

Booking Records and Indiana Public Records Law

When Valparaiso Police arrest someone and book them into Porter County Jail, a booking record is created. Under the Indiana Access to Public Records Act at IC 5-14-3, booking records are public. Anyone can ask to see them. The record includes the person's name, date of birth, booking date and time, charges, and bond amount.

Indiana's administrative rules at 210 IAC 3-1-6 set the minimum standards county jails must follow when keeping inmate records. These rules cover what data must be captured at booking, how long records must be kept, and how the public can access them. Porter County Jail operates under these standards.

If the person you are looking for was already released and is no longer on the active roster, you can still get their booking record. Submit a written public records request to the Porter County Sheriff's Office. There is no charge to submit the request. Standard per-page copying fees may apply for printed records. Ongoing investigation records may be withheld under one of the statutory exemptions in IC 5-14-3.

Additional Resources

If someone is not showing in the Porter County Jail system, they may have already been transferred to an Indiana Department of Correction facility. The IDOC offender locator at offenderlocator.idoc.in.gov lets you search by name for people in state prison, community corrections, or work release. If an arrest in Valparaiso led to a felony conviction and a state sentence, that person will appear in the IDOC system rather than the county jail roster.

The INjail portal at public.indianajail.gov covers most Indiana counties and is updated regularly. It is worth checking if you think someone may have been moved to another county or if the Porter County roster is not returning results. The portal is one of the easiest ways to do a quick cross-county search without having to visit each county's site separately.

For court case information, Indiana's mycase.in.gov lets you look up criminal and civil case records statewide for free. If an arrest has already moved to the court stage, you can track charges and upcoming hearing dates there.
